Warwick Davis's portrayal of a vengeful leprechaun has become the stuff of legend. In the film, the leprechaun is convinced that a family has stolen his pot of gold. He sets out to hunt them down, using all of his cunning and strength. Meanwhile, the family is desperately searching for the gold, in an attempt to placate the leprechaun and keep him from harming them. Dan O'Grady is originally from North Dakota, but in 1983 he went back to his country of birth, Ireland, where he abducted a leprechaun and stole his pot of gold. Once O'Grady hid the wealth, he learned that the evil leprechaun had followed him home and murdered his wife. With the help of a four-leaf clover, O'Grady restrains the leprechaun's powers and locks him up in a box. Before he could burn him, he had a stroke.
After ten years have passed, J. D. Redding decides to spend the summer at the O'Grady farmhouse with his daughter Tory, who is now a teenager. The farmhouse is now being repainted with the aid of contract workers Nathan Murphy, his 10-year-old brother Alex, and their friend Ozzie Jones, who is considered to be somewhat dimwitted. While Ozzie is scouring the basement, he overhears the leprechaun calling for help and mistakes him for a little child. He frees the leprechaun from the carton by removing the worn out four-leaf clover that was inside of it. Ozzie learns from the leprechaun that he is really an Irish shoemaker who emigrated to the United States in the hope of making his fortune. Ozzie notices a rainbow after his attempts to convince the others that he had seen a leprechaun were unsuccessful. He decides to follow the rainbow in the hopes of finding upon a treasure chest along the way. Alex follows him because he is worried that Ozzie would hurt himself in some way. A bag holding one hundred gold coins mysteriously materializes in front of Ozzie. After Ozzie examines the gold and mistakenly consumes a coin while doing so, they conceal it in an old well in the belief that this would restore Ozzie's mental capacity.
The farm leprechaun fools J. D. by pretending to be a cat and biting his hand. Tory and the others transport the leprechaun to the hospital. Alex and Ozzie visit a pawn shop to inspect the gold's purity. The leprechaun kills the owner, Joe, for stealing his gold and polishes his shoes before departing. On his way home, the leprechaun constructs a go-kart and gets caught for speeding. Leprechaun chases policeman into woods and murders him. The leprechaun returns to the farmhouse and shines every shoe he sees. After dumping off J. D., the group returns to the farm. Nathan is injured by a leprechaun-set bear trap after discovering the house ransacked. The gang beats the leprechaun with rocks and clubs outside.
After finding a gun in the house, the residents take many shots at the leprechaun. After trying to depart the site, they find that the truck's engine has been wrecked by the leprechaun. After crashing the car with the go-kart, the leprechaun terrorizes the group until Ozzie and Alex confess that they found the pot of gold. Tory fishes the purse out of the well and presents it to the leprechaun. Having decided that the worst is over, they go to the hospital. As the leprechaun tallies his gold, he learns that Ozzie stole the last coin. He threatens them because he thinks they're trying to trick him, but Ozzie reveals that O'Grady had a stroke and was taken to the hospital. The group distracts the leprechaun by throwing dirty shoes to him, and he ends up going to shine them as Tory drives off in her vehicle. At the nursing home, the leprechaun pretends as O'Grady. The leprechaun chases Tory to an elevator and throws O'Grady's bleeding body down the elevator shaft as Tory flees. Leprechaun debate clarified
Prior to the film's debut, Trimark teamed together with the NBA, the NYSE, Domino's Pizza, and Subway to spread word of mouth about the film. Franchisees of both Domino's and Subway believed they were being taken advantage of by the companies when they joined together. The producers wanted to make the movie scarier so that older people would want to see it. This meant that several scenes had to be reshot.
It is well knowledge that George Lucas was involved in the selection of Warwick Davis for the role of Willow. The explanation behind this, however, is not as well recognized. It would seem that Davis was bound by a contract with Lucas, and Lucas was required to grant his OK before Davis could feature in the film. As a consequence of this, he was recognized at the very end of the movie with a "special thanks" credit. Fans of horror films will find that the movie is much more intriguing when they learn this little-known truth. It's simply another illustration of how much of an impact George Lucas has had on popular culture.
The leprechaun was intended to flee to Ireland at first. But there was one problem: Warwick Davis, the Irish actor who played the leprechaun, did not have a work visa. Davis needed to secure a visa in three days to shoot the last sequence, which would have been impossible under normal conditions. Fortunately, Vice President Dan Quayle's administration was able to expedite the procedure, allowing Davis to complete shooting on time.
